From the above video, we hear CLG.NA Chauster complained about bad luck in season 2 world championship because they were assigned to play at purple side for all of their matches. He made it sound like CLG.NA's loss in S2 was partly due to playing at purple side.
Also from Reign Of Gaming's Analysis for all of the professional games played in August. It was clear that the statistic heavily favours the blue side.
In 145 games played the blue team won 86 of them or 59.3%
That leaves purple side winning just 59 of 145 possible games for 40.7%
22 series were extended past 2 games (best of 3's or 5's)
Of those 22 series purple won the majority of the games only 6 times or 27%
In fact, the team that was blue won all 3 games of the series an astounding 10 times.
In series where each team won at least 1 game, the deciding game was won by the Blue side 13 out of 17 times or 76.47%.
From my own observation in SEA competitive scene. All teams except TPA (the S2 champion) hold a slightly higher winning percentage (5%-20%) on blue side. The winning percentage for TPA on blue and purple is equal @ 95%.
What can we conclude from the above statistic? The conclusion is if you are on the blue side, you hold a slight advantage over your opponent.
Now let us list some of the possible advantages that blue side enjoys.
Bot access to golem in the early game, giving blue bot ad a slight edge on gold & exp.
Better vision on blue side since you do not have the interface blocking you on the top screen.
Purple top side is extremely vulnerable to gank in the early game. Blue side aggressive jungler can always come from the tribush and gank from behind.
Better access to Baron in the late game because there is no wall blockage on the blue side.
CLG.EU Krespo also pointed that it's slightly easier to steal wraiths over wall if you're blue side AP MID.
So what can Riot do to address the imbalance issue? IMHO, the only way to solve this problem is to make a perfectly symmetrical map similar to Dominion Or Twisted Tree Line (Left To Right instead of Top to Down). Until then, competitive professional players will continue to suffer a slight disadvantage when placed at purple side.
